THE FORT NOTTINGHAM HIGHLAND GAMES 2011
There is nothing more quintessentially Scottish than the Highland Games. Today's Highland Games are celebrated around the world from the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and of course Scotland, to right here at home in South Africa. The Fort Nottingham fields and surrounding village nestles in the green wooded hills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, which with some imagination, one could be mistaken for being in the Scottish Highlands.
Fort Nottingham recently celebrated the 150th year of the existence of the Fort. This is evident of the long military history of the Scottish Regiments that fought in the colonies together with the strong Scottish family history of farming and Scottish community influences in the Natal Midlands region. In 1860, London newspapers proudly reported that the Midlands district was 'finally open'...thanks to a daily, horse-drawn omnibus service that cut the journey to eleven hours.
With it's historical ties to the early Scottish pioneers in the region and the relationship to the military history with traditional colonial regiments who were raised in the province from this time and which still exist today, these interested parties will contribute significantly to the preparation and success of the games.
Fort Nottingham is close to the N3 highway (20 km) and a short drive from Pietermaritzburg and easily within a days drive from Durban and central to the famous Natal Midlands Arts and Crafts route and the largest residential concentration in the Midlands of working and retired residents.
This years Gathering will take place on Saturday April 16, 2011.
